Elene Chantladze
The Artist Elene Chantladze (1946) lives on a health resort, Tskaltubo. Based on her desire to turn private or social occurrences into expressions, Elene Chantladze uses any found materials at hand – boxes for packing, surfaces of X-ray images, tops of the paints for house renovation. In publication, each image is accompanied by a back page, which creates a double, parallel narrative. The text about Chantladze’s work, too, presents a double narrative of two diverse visions, that of an artist and that of art theory. Through an open call, a group of artists, architects and designers of diverse generations and experiences was gathered. The first stage, which implied a unique method of working the wooden materials, was held in the October 2015. Drying the prepared material took several months. The theme of the workshop was outlined: chairs. Each participant created their own sketches of a chair. The sketches were developed by Rudi Merz and Peter Schmidt. The second stage of the program was carried out in May and June of 2016. Using simple means, a wooden workshop was set up inside the gallery, where, during next five weeks, the prototypes of chairs were prepared. The improvised wooden workshop was then rendered back into gallery and the audience was presented with ten chairs.
